Madeira Island

Madeira Island is a great place for all the family all year round. Blessed with a wonderfully temperate climate, it is as much the perfect respite from a cold wintery day as from the sweltering heat of summer.

It may have a reputation for being a little old fashioned, but in the past few years things have moved on here, and you can now find activities and interests for all age groups. And best of all we are only three and a half hours from Northern Europe, and well served by both charter and scheduled airlines from all Western European countries. The international airport, with its lengthened runway, has opened up greater access to this paradise Island.

A hundred years ago they came by boat and stayed for months. Todays traveller comes by plane and stays on average for one week. But the friendly smile that greets is always the same. Madeirans want every one to love their Island, and why not!

Blessed by a temperate climate, rich in vegetation, all offset by an azure blue sea, come and see why it is that travellers have chosen Madeira as the pearl of the Atlantic for well over two hundred years.

Madeira Island Events

Madeira Island also prides itself for its regional events all year round, such as:

The Carnival festivities – two processions on different days, one sponsored by the Local Tourism Office and another one for the general local population;

The Flower Festival - that takes place in Spring when the flowers are at their best;

The Festival of the Atlantic - this fireworks festival marks the beginning of the summer festivities on the Island;

The Madeira Wine Festival - Occurs during the grape harvest in late August, early September, this event aims to recreate the old traditions of Madeira. Includes European Folklore Week, ornamentations, exhibitions and live portraits depicting wine and its crafts and light and traditional music performances;

Christmas and the New Year’s Eve - The streets of Funchal get beautifully with thousands of lights in numerous colours as well as the streets outside of Funchal with the lamp post connected with a light chain giving the impression of a lit road map when looked at from above, amongst many other regional festivities.

The Madeira's traditional religious festivals, (arraiais), are celebrated all year round and all over the Island. At these festivals you can meet the locals and Madeira's wonderful gastronomy, specifically the famous beef on a skewer made of a laurel stick, which gives it a unique flavour, bolo do caco, which is not a cake but a delicious type of bread, and the tasty poncha, which is a traditional alcoholic drink made with aguardente de cana (distilled alcohol made from sugar cane juice), honey, sugar, lemon rind and with different fruit juices according to the version of poncha, but traditionally lemon juice is used.

These celebrations are very popular and genuine because the churches themselves maintain the traditions of the various countryside villages: processions, carpets of flowers, illuminations and decorations of the streets and churches, lots of music and folklore.The most attractive ones are the Our Lady of Monte (Monte) and The Lord of Bom Jesus (Ponta Delgada).
